Records document Dr. Burnett's administration of the College, its daily operations, curriculum, program development, accreditation, and building programs. Correspondence with administrators, faculty and departments on campus, especially Athletics for the bulk of the record. The program exchange with Savannah State University, as well as discussions of merger, and the plans for developing a regional university are well-documented. Dr. Burnett's work with community organizations, such as the Boy Scouts, and his membership on the Board of Trustees of Candler Hospital, and correspondence with educational associations are also a significant part of the record.

Founded in 1935 as a city junior college of Savannah, Georgia. After joining the University System of Georiga in 1963, Armstrong was designated a four year college. During the 1970s and 1980s Armstrong was one of the colleges directly affected by court ordered desegregation. Born in 1934 in Spartanburg South Carolina, Robert Burnett received his Ph D. in History from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1968. After serving as Professor of History, Chairman of the History Department and University Ombudsman at University of Louisville from 1968-1978, Dr. Burnett joined the faculty of Armstrong State College in 1978 as Professor of History and Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences.
